What I have noticed is that the New Age I Ching Predestination Lifechart seems to be remarkably accurate in describing the broad trends in your life. Events like marriage, serious illness, and finacial failure or success usually seem to be indicated. However, perhaps its true value lies not in the fact of a prediction's accuracy, but rather in that it gives a more objective perspective on the trends and events in your life. Using this knowledge, it is possible for you to better deal emotionally (and perhaps intellectually) with the influences affecting you and the course of your life.
A comment should be made at this point about the concept of "predestination." Basically, this is an unpopular idea; in fact, the idea horrifies many people today. They would like to believe that each person's fate is entirely dependent on what they themselves do. Well, my observations regarding predestination as I have seen it are that your actions contribute to the degree of whatever quality the lifechart predicts, but that the lifechart indicates the direction and general tendency of your progress. Thus, you cannot simply rest on an assurance that what is predicted will come true in the manner in which you expect it. In fact, often you will be surprised that you were wrong in your guess, and yet you will usually agree with the assessment later.
The Lifechart does not make your life read like a novel. Indeed, the single greatest lesson that you will gain is that while your path ahead is illuminated to some degree, it is far from clear. Much like any science, the more we learn, the more questions we develop.
Let us now turn to the Predestination Lifechart itself. The New Age I Ching Predestination Lifechart is based on Shao Yung's numerical calculation system. However, it does differ somewhat from Shao's original method. In Shao's original method, the calculation process produces the following items: In my analysis of the calculation process I could not prove the annual (#3) or daily (#4) predictions were accurate. However, I found that the fundamental hexagrams (#1) seemed to be accurate, and the multiple-year predictions (#2) were proven to be highly accurate. As I studied the patterns it was clear to me that the underlying numerical structure seemed to posess validity, and the errors of the annual and daily prediction pattern were due to invalid transformation processes based upon these more valid calculations. Furthermore, although I could see the validity of the predictions which his system produced, it was clear to me that there were other events and situations in my life which were not mentioned. Therefore, I began a study of alternative transformations.
The New Age I Ching Predestination Lifechart has evolved to the point now where it -- in addition to the fundamental early life and later life hexagrams -- produces four series of multiple-year predictions and four series of annual predictions. [I also am experimenting with four series of monthly predictions, but these are not being offered commercially at this time.] Furthermore, I have one series of predictions running which seem to work for the United States of America, that is, applying the concept to a larger "entity", but this is not being made public at this time.
The Lifechart produces a lot of text (75+ pages) for the multiyear and annual charts. The longer-term predictions are more powerful than the shorter term ones. Thus, they can be viewed as stacking one on top of the other, rather like a tiered wedding cake. However, there is no easy way to say exactly how each prediction will translate into actual events in your life, since each prediction inherently has a number of different outcomes in the real world. However, even if a precise plan of your life were given to you, I imagine that you would find it very uncomfortable reading and dealing with. After all, we do need to feel some sense of adventure and uncertainty about the events in our lives -- too much certainty is something we could not easily accept.
In my book The New Age I Ching in the conclusion there is a reference made to the Enneagram as a complement to the I Ching. The same applies here, however, with even greater applicability.
The Enneagram is the Sufi personality typing system which is the most sophisticated means of understanding who we are and where we are going psychologically. By understanding your Enneagram pattern you understand both your basic life orientations and what your natural evolution over time will be. This is because the Enneagram identifies how we use our greatest strength in dealing with the world, and how we try to avoid and suppress our personal weaknesses. As "improperly balanced" individuals who have become mature, we cannot help but unconsciously seek to right ourselves and come to terms with the world and with what is inside of us, that is, come to terms with what we need to complete ourselves as whole peole. This is why the Enneagram's predictive patterns now make sense.
Now, if you understand your Enneagram type, then you would expect that the predestination patterns would be complimentary to the Enneagram predictions. In particular, you might expect them to fit together as an evolutionary whole. And, in fact, this is what I have observed in a number of individuals. The Lifechart plus the Enneagram generally seems to indicate not only how the individual changes, but also something about the nature of the change during specific periods of time.
This combination of the two provides an extremely powerful and unique perspective on our lives and growth as human beings. To master this, however, requires that you study the Enneagram and understand how your own type evolves over time. If you do, you will find it to be a very interesting and rewarding study. The Predestination Lifechart is sold neither as an "amusement" nor with a guarantee that it will predict your life in detail or without a doubt. It is sold "as is" as an accurate calculator using Shao's basic principles with a number of transformations added which appear to have value. While the Lifechart is sold in the belief that it will probably provide a resonably approximation of the events in your life, it should be clearly understood it is being sold to you as a "scientific experiment" for you to test the principles which Shao Yung developed. As such, it presents you with a series of hypotheses which you can test and evaluate yourself. The more significant and powerful the events in a specific time period, the more easily you should be able to test the system's predictions for that period.
All comments, critiques, and observations concerning the accuracy of the Prediction Lifechart in predicting your life are welcome. It was due to a couple inaccurate predictions in a series of accurate ones that led to the discovery of two transmitted errors in Shao's system (i.e., one of the many "transformation tables" in his original method contained two obvious errors which when corrected produced accurate predictions). Current inaccuracies at this time are not thought to be caused by the calculation process, but rather misinterpretations of the relevant I Ching text. Currently Liefcharts are not being produced routinely, although it is hoped that this will change in the near future. (Lifecharts need to be paid by check or postal money order for $50 U.S. for printed charts, or $30 U.S. for charts transmitted electronically).
